Negativity Bias

Negativity bias, also known as negativity bias, is a psychological phenomenon in which people tend to perceive, remember and prioritise negative information or events more than positive ones. This tendency to focus more on negative aspects can significantly influence our thinking, behaviour and decision-making.

This bias has evolutionary roots and can be seen as a survival mechanism. In the past, it was vital for our ancestors to recognise potential dangers and threats quickly in order to protect themselves. The tendency therefore developed to pay more attention to negative stimuli.

However, in the modern world, negativity bias can lead to a distortion of our perceptions. It can cause us to overlook or downplay positive experiences and opportunities while overly focussing on negative events or risks. Understanding this bias is important in order to make more conscious decisions and develop a more balanced and positive thought pattern.
